The word rave was used to describe the subculture that revolved around the acid house music genre. Music venues were filled with staple 90s grunge-style music flyers, and the alternative rock scene was booming. If there's one iconic 90s design style, it was grungy underground posters, and this flyer is a perfect example of that.

It was all about learning about the fundamentals of the craft and figuring out which rules you can bend. In the spirit of standing on the shoulders of giants, here are influential artists of the 1990s who changed the game with their iconic works and significant contribution to graphic design. The 1990s is popular for its imagination in music, fashion, film, TV, and even technology. The entire decade was powerfully evocative, whether it be TV ads, posters, logos, or even advertisements in glossy magazines.

Design trends from this era can be found in posters, album covers and fonts. As artist Dave Perillo has shown, even some of our favorite old friends are back in action. Paula Scher is probably one of the most famous female graphic designers in the world. Not only is she famous for her design work, but she is also known for overhauling theatre promotion standards and setting a new norm. Scher gave a fresh identity to institutions such as the New York City Ballet, Metropolitan Opera, The Public Theater, and the New York Shakespeare Festival. She also served as the first female principal at Pentagram, which she joined in 1991.

Geri Halliwell of the Spice Girls wore her infamous homemade Union Jack Dress at the 1997 Brit Awards. The Britpop aesthetic largely borrowed from the 1960s mod aesthetic and featured other bands like Oasis and Blur. With an emphasis on Britishness, fashion featured parkas, polo shirts, like those of Fred Perry, and bucket hats. Britpop’s aesthetics were bold and simple, contrasting the Grunge aesthetic.
On the one hand, we had the underground rock and rave culture influences, and on the other hand – the bright and optimistic pop culture style. One was messy and distressed, and the other one looked neat and sugar-sweet. Alt-music movements sprang up in reaction to the polished pop of earlier years, with the Seattle Grunge scene going on to be one of the most influential music styles of the decade. The plaid and eyeliner aesthetic championed by bands like Nirvana, Bush, and Hole influenced the carefree spirit of fashion and design throughout the mid-to-late 1990s.
This was a time when everyone was looking towards the future, celebrating the turn of the millennium and wanting to reflect excitement by wearing shiny clothes and silver eyeshadow. Grunge and punk musicians looking to promote their DIY gigs would often use xerox copy machines to cheaply mass print handmade posters they’d made themselves. The rough textures and unconventional layouts of this iconic grunge look were infamously referenced by designer David Carson in 1990s alternative rock magazine Ray Gun. Groovival, a term coined by the The Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute, was the ’90s answer to rehashing the groovy flower power aesthetic of the 1960s and ’70s. This both appealed to ‘boomers’ for its nostalgic qualities, as well as to young children for its bright colors and novelty groovy motifs. With the release of the Austin Powers franchise and the popularity of ’90s band Deee-lite, swingin’ ’60s flower power patterns crept up on us in fashion, music videos and films.
This show alone is a great embodiment of everything we aim to describe in this post, with the storyline itself as well as the fashion, set design and title font all capturing the 90s era. The style has also been translated into editorial design, where readers can have a special reading experience. Designs have become more expressive, and typography is louder, with colorful palettes. The DIY (Do It Yourself) ethos of the 90s gave rise to the zine culture, where individuals created their own magazines and publications using collage-style layouts and photocopied graphics.
